Here below you see a few types.
This is a standard self centered 3 jaw chuck.
Most used on a hobby Lathe You can clamp massive products. ( also pipes but not so good ) Most capable for round, hexagonal and triangle shaped products
Good: Clamp your product fast.
Bad: Your product is never exactly in the middle
This is a standard self centered 3 jaw chuck with a possibility to place your product exact in center.
 You can clamp massive products. ( also pipes but not so good ) Most capable for round, hexagonal and triangle shaped products
Good: Clamp your product fast. Your product is always exactly in the middle 0.003mm
How does it works.
Well that’s easy “C” is the “normal” jaw chuck and is mounted to “B” ( not tight ) Plate “A” is fixed to the machine. “B” is fixed to “A” With screw “D” ( there are 3 around ) you can shift “C” with regard to “B” for about 0.2mm Screw “D” is a screw with a conical surface like here below.

This is a standard 4 jaw independent chuck.
You can clamp massive products. ( also pipes but not so good , but better then with 3 jaws ) Most capable for round and square shaped products
Good : * With some practice you can clamp your product exactly in the middle * You can clamp heavy products. * You can clamp your product far out the middle. ( make a contra weight )
Bad: * It cost you a lot of time to clamp something good in the middle.
This is a standard self centered 6 jaw chuck.
 Most capable for round, hexagonal and triangle shaped products
Good: Clamp your product fast. Good for pipes. Good for heavy products.
Bad: Your product is never exactly in the middle
